Doyle Brunson proves He still has Game

With the game of poker growing to epic proportions and the influx of new, younger players into the game, many of the old timers have undergone intense scrutiny from critics.  Doyle Brunson is definitely one of the old timers to be criticized heavily and he may in fact be the most criticized out of anybody.

A good indication of this is when Layne Flack and him got into a dispute in an incident regarding rebuy events in the WSOP.  Basically Brunson has argued against these for years saying they allow players to buy a bracelet since they can just keep re-buying in after busting out.  Flack, who definitely seems to be pro-rebuy events, countered by saying that Brunson won all of his gold bracelets back when nobody was playing.

And, to a degree, I definitely think that Flack has a point here since there weren’t many people at the WSOP events when Brunson was hauling in bracelets.  But that’s not to say that Brunson can’t play the game anymore and has been surpassed by the younger players.  In fact, Brunson proved this point over the weekend in a high stakes game at Bobby’s Room in the Bellagio.

For some reason or another, Brunson decided to step outside of his usual tournament routine and skip the WPT Championship in favor of playing at Bobby’s Room.  Brunson isn’t normally known for his cash game exploits, but on this weekend he decided to do just that.

Faced with some of the toughest cash game competition in the world including the likes of Phil Ivey, Brunson was able to win $2 million.  After his victory, Brunson explained how he would have had to win the WPT Championship just to equal the amount he made over the weekend.  Considering how much he raked in, I think Brunson might skip more tournaments in the future.
