2010 WSOP Changes already announced

It hasn’t even been two months since the bulk of the 2009 World Series of Poker ended and we have yet to see the Main Event final table play out.  However, Harrah’s Entertainment and the WSOP organizers aren’t wasting any time in announcing the changes which we can expect to see in 2010.

WSOP officials recently announced that they will be doing away with the $40,000 Anniversary event as well as the Champions Tournament too.  The reason why they’ve decided to drop both of these events is because they were only added to the 2009 schedule to commemorate the 40th year of the WSOP.  So basically, the WSOP is saying that it doesn’t make sense to hold either tournament again when the event will be going into its 41st year.

I’m sure some of the high rollers will be disappointed about the $40k buy-in tournament being dropped because it gives them another elite tourney where only skill players have enough money to enter.  However, the WSOP is trying to keep their event as one in which players of all bankrolls can buy into so having too many high buy-in tournaments will definitely defeat this goal.

But this doesn’t mean that we won’t see similar tournaments returning in 10 years when the WSOP goes to celebrate its 50th anniversary.  In fact, WSOP officials have said that they plan to have the Champions Tournament back for that occasion and they might even stage something like a $50,000 buy-in event too.  This would be kind of odd since there is already a $50k H.O.R.S.E. event, but I guess it would still make some sense at the same time just because of the 50th year celebration.
