Applying Poker Book Knowledge
Us poker players are certainly lucky to live in the age we are in today. Poker strategy books are everywhere on the Internet and in book stores too so it’s certainly no problem finding help for your game. This is in great contrast to the early and mid-70’s where little was known about poker strategy since Doyle Brunson’s Super System had yet to be written.
But with the vast amount of knowledge that is available today, we must also be careful since it’s not all universal strategy. In poker there are players of different skill levels, games, and bankrolls so you’ve got to be careful what you’re reading and applying.
First off, you should be aware of what skill level you’re at before grabbing just any poker book off of the shelf. The reason for this is that you can’t just be following the advice of anyone if you’re only a beginning player; you need strategy that caters to your skills. And reading a Daniel Negreanu book on how he plays the world’s best tournament players just isn’t going to cut it!
Another thing you should be aware of is that you need a book which caters specifically to the game you play. For instance, cash game players should not be reading books that are geared towards tournament players and vice versa. You need a book that is both of your skill level and your specific game too.
One more thing to keep in mind when reading poker books is that you’re going to need to hit the tables in order to practice what you’ve learned. Just reading a book is not going to magically make you a professional poker player. So obviously you need to put some practice into the matter.
