Solid Risks to take in Poker

Anybody who chooses to take up the game of poker is putting themselves at risk.  Sure some people may not be risking that much - especially micro stakes players - but other people are willing to lay a lot more money on the line and risk quite a bit at this point.  Since there is already enough risk involved in poker, you need to know what some of the good risks to take are.

Raising before the flop is something that many people see as a risky maneuver.  However, you definitely want to make pre-flop raises whenever possible if you’re holding a pretty solid hand.  For instance, something such as suited K-Q can definitely help you towards a monster hand and is something which is often worthy of a pre-flop raise.  Of course premium hands such as A-A down to J-J are also worth pre-flop raises as dictated by common poker strategy.

Another risk that is worth taking in poker is going all-in during tournaments.  Some people prescribe to the theory that they are better off playing like rocks and avoiding all-in situations.  But it’s pretty hard to go deep in tournaments and win major money if you don’t go all-in once and a while.  Just make sure to pick your spots and choose good times to go all-in.

One more thing to keep in mind with regards to risks is that you need to know when not to take them as well.  For instance, if you’re holding a second rate hand and think that you might be beat then it is a good idea to check and call as much as possible.  When you do this, you avoid the risk of putting too much in the pot only to be beaten later on.
